US Midterm Elections 2026: Control of Congress Hangs in the Balance

US Midterm Elections 2026

The US Midterm Elections 2026 will reshape Washington. 30Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers heading into the 2026 midterms, with 33 Senate seats and all 435 House seats contested. The general election is set for November 3, 2026.

The Senate Map

Control of the upper chamber is a genuine toss-up. 32The U.S. Senate has 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats (including two independents). There are 35 seats up in 2026 – including special elections in Florida and Ohio – of which 22 are held by Republicans. Democrats can retake control with a net gain of four seats. 33Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff is up for re-election and could be vulnerable, while Michigan is a tantalizing target especially after Senator Gary Peters announced his retirement.

The House Battle

The House hinges on a small handful of seats. 34In 2026, Democrats are seeking to reclaim the House majority, after coming tantalizingly close to victory in two straight election cycles. They need to flip just three seats to secure the majority. 37Analysts predict only 66 seats have at least a slight chance of becoming close races.

What the Forecasts Say

Models favor Democrats but note uncertainty. 35As of August 3, 2026, one model gives Democrats an 85% chance of winning the majority of seats in the House, and a 55% chance of winning control of the Senate. 34The Democratic Party remains the clear favorite this cycle, as midterm elections are almost always a check on the President’s party. Still, redistricting has helped the GOP: 34after new maps in Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia, Republicans’ chances of winning the House rose from 18.9% to 27.2% in early May.
